A historically black university in Hampton, Virginia, Hampton University was founded in the wake of the American Civil War to educate freed slaves. This legacy lives on in the Hampton University Museum, which is the oldest museum of the African diaspora in the US. At one point in its history, Hampton University also had an education program for Native Americans.Today, the university has over 4,500 students and two-thirds of the student body are female. Approximately nine-tenths of the student body identify as black, while only a third are from the state of Virginia.The university has 10 schools and colleges, covering such subject areas as engineering and technology, business, and nursing. 50 undergraduate programs are offered in total, alongside 26 master’s programs and seven doctoral programs. Students benefit from the use of 16 research centers on campus. There are also four libraries, including one dedicated to music and another to nursing.
